Tom Petty’s Former Home in the City of Angels Is for Sale
Los Angeles, especially the Valley, was the rock-and-roll hall of famer’s muse, and many of his songs were written in the basement of this Encino Hills home.
Whoever buys Tom Petty’s former home in Encino’s prestigious Rancho Estates certainly won’t have to live like a refugee. The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom gated compound has been put on the market by his ex-wife, American girl Jane Petty, for $3.575 million.
Encompassing 9,076 square feet on just under an acre, the house, built in 1989, has a decidedly Western lodge feel, with plenty of wood paneling and high beamed ceilings, as well as a two-story stone fireplace.
Located at the end of a cul-de-sac and perched on a hilltop, it wasn’t remote enough to escape an arson fire that spared Petty’s basement full of recording equipment, masters and guitars, according to the Los Angeles Times.
It was in that studio where Petty was probably inspired to write songs specifically referencing nearby City of Angels locals, such as a good girl living in Reseda, vampires walking through the Valley, moving west down Ventura Boulevard, and wanting to glide down over Mulholland, among numerous other mentions.

When he wasn’t spending time in the basement, he doubtless enjoyed many of the home’s other amenities. The gourmet kitchen is perfect for entertaining large numbers of friends and/or fans, with its blue granite center island prep station, dual Viking ovens and stovetops and dual refrigerators. There are also guest quarters on the lower level, with a separate kitchen and entrance.
Also good for entertaining are the raised waterfall spa and lagoon pool, as well as the covered patio for alfresco dining overlooking fully landscaped grounds.
For private time, the wood-paneled master suite was built to please, from rock royalty to commoner. It’s like a retreat, with a viewing balcony, huge walk-in, cedar-lined closet, and a bath with dual sinks and an oversized shower and spa tub. Nearby there’s a gym/yoga room with an adjacent bath and sauna.
A media room, formal dining room, gigantic great room and several en suite bedrooms are also featured in this home that has been completely updated and expanded. Many of the original features have been left intact, however, the vast expanses of woodwork among them.
It remains to be seen if the former Mrs. Petty will stand her ground at the current asking price of $3.575 million. Zillow estimates the house even higher at $4.073 million, so there’s a good chance that she Won’t. Back. Down.
