The Price Tide Rises on L.A.'s Venice Canals

Venice real estate has come a long way since the 1950s, when the area was not so affectionately known as “The Slum by the Sea.” These days, it’s been called home by hip celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Anjelica Huston, Matt Stone, Trey Parker, Robert Downey, Jr., Jon Favreau, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer and Tim Robbins, just to name a few. And then there’s the Toms shoes headquarters and flagship store right there on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, close to where Blake Mycoskie and five interns started the whole enterprise. What could be cooler than that?

Prices, of course, are reflecting the prestige. Recently Tami Pardee of Pardee Properties, the area’s most prominent broker, made the highest house sale in the history of Venice’s storied canals: a brand new construction, 3,700-square-foot modern home from developer Christian Salceda, for $3,900,000.

The Howland Canal runs right by the four-bedroom, four-bath home that covers most of its 2,858-square-foot lot. In lieu of a large yard, there is a two-tiered roof top deck with 360-degree views of the canals and beyond.

The home is sunlit throughout, thanks to the high ceilings, open floor plan and abundant floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors with steel frames. Additional luxurious features include reclaimed Douglas fir beams and wide plank French oak floors.

A masterfully crafted steel-trimmed floating staircase leads to a second level with two bedrooms and a spacious master suite, complete with a fireplace, built-in shelving, walk-in closets and a very modern master bath. There’s more living space on the third level, which could be used for guest quarters, a screening room, and/or a home office.

As with all the homes that Pardee sells, the proceeds from this one will become part of her “Giving Back” program, which allocates 10 percent of net sales on each property sold to the local charity of her client’s choice. For more information on this property, click here.
