Wacker Drive Luxury Apartment Tower (Finally!) Topped Off

Would it ever finish? Guided by Related Midwest, the on-again-off-again development overlooking the river is closing in on a 2014 premiere.

Photo by: Related Midwest Related Midwest purchased the troubled development in 2011 and took over construction of the apartment tower in October 2012. 

First it was the site of Waterview Tower with a luxe condo Shangri-La Hotel attached. It was a good idea crushed under a bad break: In 2008, construction failed and fizzled at the 28th floor leaving an incomplete shell pockmarking the skyline -- for three long years.

A rescue was needed and Related Midwest stepped in to triage, pulled top dollar together through its aptly named Related Real Estate Recovery Fund and purchased the site in 2011. They re-packaged a new team with New York's Handel Architects on the boards and Lend Lease U.S. Construction on the build, and in October 2012, cranes, hard hats and hammering swung the tower back in business, even as skeptical skyline watchers still held their breath. The 60-story high-rise is now topped off and on schedule for a summer 2014 opening. Really. Go look.

On amenities, Chicagoans can expect the Related five-star treatment from developers that have set the bar for living large pretty high. (See 500 Lakeshore Drive for clues.) For the planned 504 downtown luxury apartments, urbanites can select studios, convertibles and units up to three-bedrooms (don't forget the penthouses), with interior styling by Kara Mann, one of the slickest space genies on the scene and a Related alum (she put the edge on suites at 500 LSD).
