Things to do in Druid Hills, Georgia
From museums to walking trails, there's plenty to do in this neighborhood.
The Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta offers a wide range of things to do, for both residents and visitors alike.
This neighborhood, which sits about five miles east of Atlanta, is known for its parks and cultural attractions. For a great family outing, check out Fernbank Museum of Natural History, located on Clifton Road. The museum features permanent exhibitions, including the Dinosaur Plaza, which features a family of bronze dinosaurs; a Walk through Time in Georgia, which explores the state's natural history, and Fernbank Nature Quest, an interactive experience that allows visitors to discover the natural world through hands-on exhibits. The museum also has special exhibitions that ensure future visits to the museum will be a fresh experience.
Another popular attraction in Druid Hills is Fernbank Science Center on Heaton Park Drive. The center has a planetarium that is one of the nation's largest celestial theaters in the round. There's also an observatory that houses the largest telescope in the southeastern United States. Free public observations are offered every Thursday and Friday night, weather permitting. In the exhibit hall are two levels of interactive, hands-on activities. The center also has meteorology and aerospace labs, as well as other activities.
Fernbank Forest, located in the southeast corner of Druid Hills, is a 65-acre wooded area with old-growth vegetation. The site has walking trails and a recreation center. Druid Hills is also home to other well-maintained parks. Olmsted Linear Park has 50 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Other local parks include Mason Mill Park and Medlock Park, which both have playgrounds.
If you want to take in the arts, visit Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, which offers classes, concerts, poetry readings and other events in the gothic Tudor-style home of Charles Howard Candler, the oldest son of Asa Candler, founder of Coca-Cola. You can also tour the mansion and its 12.5-acre grounds. Nearby Emory University offers a range of activities, including concerts, films and distinguished speakers. The Visual Arts Gallery on campus hosts several contemporary art shows each year, as well as a student exhibit.
Druid Hills also has its own shopping district. Emory Village has a mix of shops and restaurants, a bank, pharmacy and dry cleaners.
