The United State Supreme Court: Examples of Neoclassical Architecture

The United State Supreme Court building is another large-scale example of the Neoclassical style. The style was used widely in the early part of the 20th century institutional settings. Though the Supreme Court building was erected in the 1930s, architect Cass Gilbert channeled Neoclassical ideas into his design. The immense dormer is carved with allegories of justice and mercy. In true Neoclassical style, the dormer is supported by two rows of eight columns across the front of the building -- always an even number.
