Despite weather reports, schools were not closed; workers were not sent home and road crews were not sent out until after the storm began. Thousands of people were stranded or merely abandoned their cars seeking shelter.
Georgia's perimeter 285 was completely jammed in all directions. Conditions did not improve overnight and drivers were stranded with no access to food or water. Many ran out of gas and abandoned their cars.
