Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Charleston, South Carolina Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Dating back to 1676, Magnolia Plantation on Ashley River Road is one of the oldest plantations in the South. Originally a rice plantation, the residence became known for its gardens in the 1840s, when the Rev. John Grimke Drayton inherited the property and began to rework the gardens in the English style. Today the magnificent property is open to the public, and its horticulture mazes and peaceful ponds are a regular attraction for both locals and visitors.
