Biscayne Boulevard's iconic Vagabond Motel is getting an extensive restoration by developer and historic preservationist Avra Jain. Her team is working overtime to complete the project in time to throw a swanky party during Art Basel Miami Beach in December. Historic design advocates hail the Vagabond as a prime example of 1950s and 1960s MiMo architectural design with characteristics like an open-air plan, jalousie windows and geometric designs.
Unfortunately, the mermaid mosaic is too badly damaged to restore it to its full former glory. The good news is that Avra Jain hired a local Miami artist to re-create an exact replica of the mermaid, using tiles from Italy.
