Georgia's Places in Peril, 2014: Blackshear Prison Camp

Established in 1864 as a POW station for Union soldiers during the Civil War, the Blackshear Prison Camp housed more than 5,000 inmates. According to historic records, many soldiers died here. At least 20 bodies were recovered and reinterred at nearby Beaufort National Cemetery.
