Located in the Charleston Harbor, this masonry sea fort is best known for the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861, when the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Today, the fort is open to visitors and accessible by a 30-minute ferry ride from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center or Patriots Point.
