With its glistening, gold-plated dome, the Colorado Capitol is a key feature of the Denver skyline. Built in the 1890s, the structure bears a resemblance to the nation's capitol but was constructed primarily with locally sourced materials. In 1908, the dome was plated with 24-karat gold, commemorating Colorado's Gold Rush days and the early pioneers and miners who helped build the state. Inside, the dome soars 180 feet high and features stained-glass depictions of the 16 initial founders of Denver.
