On Feb. 22, 1732, the country’s first commander-in-chief was born at Pope’s Creek Estate near present-day Colonial Beach, Va. Now known as the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, the plantation was settled by Washington’s great-grandfather in 1657, and the first section of the house was built before 1718. Meanwhile, this charming home in Colonial Beach was also under construction just a few miles away, set on a ridge overlooking the Rappahannock River.
