Backyard Inspiration From Coconut Grove Homeowners

Steve and Emilie Wernick purchased a home in one of Miami's most lush tropical neighborhoods. Perfect for entertaining guests, the couple has turned their backyard into the ideal space to host a summer soiree.

She's an avid gardener and enjoys planting all types of tropical foliage. "Hibiscus plants love our yard and we love them — they do so well and have these incredible large flowers that are pink, yellow, red and orange," she said.

Emilie said living in The Grove is like living in paradise. "The water is a short walk away, along with all the unique shops and restaurants of downtown Coconut Grove," she said. "We're truly a little village, where neighbors know one another and really enjoy living, working and playing in the same part of town together."

After finding their ideal first home together, the couple got to work designing the backyard, planting trees and flowers to enhance the natural beauty around the pool. They've managed to create a welcoming tropical oasis — the perfect place to entertain guests.

Like an enchanting garden, the backyard features mango, avocado and banana trees, a whimsical tree swing, Adirondack chairs and a sparkling pool.

I asked Emilie for a few tips on how to host a successful outdoor party.

"The key to a great backyard garden party is to make sure guests are relaxed and truly enjoying themselves," she said. "It's matter of good drinks, soft music, relaxed table decor and delicious food."

For her most recent garden party, Emilie drew inspiration from a trip to Sonoma and went for a rustic look with burlap and wildflowers. She set up an outdoor Bloody Mary Bar that was a big hit with her guests.
