Outstanding Buckhead Condo for $180,000
Located in the heart of Buckhead, no doubt you've blinked and missed this elusive yet memorable mid-rise.
If you have ever driven the stretch of Piedmont Road towards Roswell Road past the Disco Kroger you probably never noticed the Barclay Condominiums. And you probably didn’t know that in real estate lingo this neighborhood is called Buckhead Forest. Color us surprised.

What is also remarkable is that this gem of a building has
remained a secret for so long. The concrete 14-story mid-rise sits quietly down
a long driveway far from the Buckhead bustle. Though the exterior smacks of
midcentury opulence, it was constructed in 1983. The grounds are nicely kept
and the building has a covered awning convenient for drop off and pick up. The
visitors’ parking is located right in front of the building while
residents enjoy two stories of gated and video-monitored covered parking. There’s
also a 24-doorman.
With all of the new buildings popping up overnight, the Barclay has done a fine job in keeping pace and takes its maintenance very seriously. New sofas, chairs and artwork in the common areas were replaced in 2011 and the lobby’s marble is shined and buffed on a regular basis. The pool, gym and banquet facility are kept sparkling clean. The tennis courts could use a resurfacing, but they are in fine shape. Most importantly, the staff is always courteous and friendly.
The bulk of the residents are noticeably older than the populations in neighboring condo communities. Usually when they talk about “hip” it is followed by the word “replacement.” Our theory is that these folks once inhabited the opulent homes of Blackland and Valley and have downsized and simplified. This keeps the building nice and quiet and the only real excitement is when ladies gather for mahjong in the spacious party room. This space could use an update though we find the furniture rather charming, very Mrs. Robinson pool party-esque. There’s also no fee for reserving the room like some other condo associations.
Most units have large balconies designed with complete privacy in mind. The floors are reinforced concrete and steel assuring little noise from the neighbors above. There are several units on the MLS, including the 3,200-square-foot penthouse for $675,000, which was completely renovated around 2010.
The unit that caught our eye, however, was just listed and won’t last long. It’s an 1,800-square foot two-bedroom, two-bath unit currently listed at $180,000. While the interior is somewhat dated, it has been impeccably maintained. The galley kitchen features new stainless steel appliances and the living room has nice plantation shutters. We love the unit’s wet bar, very old school ring-a-ding-ding/it’s-five-o’clock-somewhere vibe.
