Malibu's Most-Expensive Property Gets Price Chop

Discounted by a whopping $21 million, La Villa Contenta comes with priceless antiques, a Romanesque natatorium and to-die-for views.

The 21-mile long stretch of Southern California coastline known as Malibu is the laid-back equivalent of the East Coast’s Hamptons, where palatial estates and celebrity enclaves abound. It’s not usually a place for bargain hunters, but if you consider a $21 million price slash a deal, today you're in luck.

Of course, you'll still have to come up with $54 million for developer Richard Weintraub's La Villa Contenta, a 20,000-square-foot ocean-view estate at Latigo Shores, which was listed back in 2010 as Malibu's priciest property at $75 million. Not the best timing to put the place on the market.

Sellers are hoping someone will now be willing to snap up the property at the reduced price. It's certainly lush, with Venetian marble walls and Baccarat and Murano chandeliers — and that’s just in the six-bedroom, six-bath guesthouse!

The uber-elegant main villa features a library with an Hermes marble fireplace, a double living room furnished with priceless antiques, a dining room that seats 24, 18th-century chandeliers of amethyst and rock crystal, a billiards room, a wine cellar, a solarium, a fully equipped gym, two staircases, an elevator, and a screening room with a 14-foot screen.

But the feature that blows away most people is the natatorium, a fancy name for a poolhouse. This one is Romanesque and has a frieze over the doorway constructed of more than a million seashells. Changing rooms are paneled in onyx, and the pool has 20-foot-tall glass ceilings and is tiled in Murano glass. You might have seen this pool on HBO's True Blood it was used for Queen Sophie's mansion.

There’s also one of the largest private greenhouses in the state, which can accommodate several thousand orchids. And don't forget the tennis court, another freestanding guest suite described as a “Zen getaway,” and servants'/security quarters with private entrances.

Now, if $54 million is still too rich for your blood, you could acquire the main house alone for $23.8 million.  Who would get the additional properties and how they'll be divided up remains to be seen, but for that much money, you can bet it's all negotiable.
