How Much House Does $250,000 Get You in Chicago?
Part two of our bang-for-your-buck series: See what a quarter million buys you in the Windy City, from Logan Square to Grand Boulevard.
Des Plaines. The “City of Destiny” gave us baseball all-star Shawn Green and McDonalds. Heading deep northwest near the O’Hare Airport, the median sales and average listing prices are neck-and-neck, at $119,000 and $200,000 respectively. You can still find homes for $100,000 there. So, at $250,000, how much house does this suburb deliver? Well, we found this spanking new development of 149 townhomes located in downtown Des Plaines at 1238 Harding Avenue. There are three floor plans in the Lexington Park community: The Bristol, a 2-bed, 2.5-bath for $242,900; The Warrington has 2-3 bedrooms and 2-bath units priced at $259,900; The Coventry, a 3-bed, 2.5-bath starts at $275,000. If you work in the city and can churn that commute, enticing low interest rates could make a mortgage worth it. The developer, Lexington Homes, expects occupancy to continue from October 2013 through February 2014. Perk: Des Plaines River Trail.
