Beachy-Keen House in Venice Now Available
Designed to be reminiscent of the ocean both inside and out, this architectural home is a beach lover's bliss.
If it looks like a wave and smells like a wave, it must be a … house. At least that’s the case with this Venice home that has recently come on the market for $2.495 million. With the house located a little more than two blocks from the beach, the roof was designed by prominent architect Fred Fisher to look like waves breaking. As a matter of fact, this house was his first solo project — he had previously studied with Frank Gehry.
The inside of this modern beach house has a design concept that replicates the hull of a boat, so owners have the feeling of living onboard. There are oversized skylights and lofted balconies, with beamed ceilings of Douglas fir.
Originally built in 1979, the current owners, Co-President of CBS Films Wolfgang Hammer and his wife, refurbished and restored the house in 2008 to its current gleaming state. They had the wood sanded and added a new kitchen with stainless steel Viking appliances and plenty of built-in storage. They also updated the three bathrooms.
There are three bedrooms in 2,684 square feet of space. The house is just right for someone who can’t bring themselves to leave the beach to go to work — there’s an office or guest room and bath in back with French doors, exposed-beam ceilings and a loft. The ocean is about a two-minute walk away, unless you're toting a surfboard.

The centerpiece of the home is the expansive two-story atrium with skylights galore. A double staircase feeds from that room into two bedrooms, which are upstairs separated by a catwalk area that's used as a library.
The sunny master suite features more exposed-beam ceilings, lots of closet space and an oversized bath.
At 2,707 square feet, the lot is not huge, as few properties this close to the beach in Venice are. But for outdoor living, there's a striking roof deck with 360-degree views and a surfer’s shower in front, so sand and salt can be kept on the outside where it belongs.
It’s reported that the couple is reluctantly leaving their beach paradise in order to be closer to work and family. Hammer’s professional projects have included overseeing deals for CBS films such as Salmon Fishing in the Yemen with Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor and The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe.
Tami Pardee of Pardee Properties in Venice is representing the sale. She currently reigns as being number one in sales in Greater Los Angeles. As noted in a previous FrontDoor feature, she is known for donating 10% of her net proceeds from each sale to a local charity of the client’s choice.
