Woody Harrelson Celebrates Birthday in Atlanta Treehouses

In town filming "Triple Nine," the A-lister was hosted by friend and fellow environmental activist Peter Bahouth at his Buckhead home.

It makes perfect sense to us that Peter Bahouth, the former executive director of Greenpeace and the Turner Foundation, would have three treehouses on his Atlanta property. It also stands to reason that the environmentalist is a friend of actor and activist Woody Harrelson. The True Detective star is a longtime vegan, lives on a working farm in Maui and even owns Step Forward Paper, a company dedicated to developing tree and pulp-free paper products.

Harrelson was recently in Atlanta filming  Triple Nine, a crime/heist drama along with Cate Winslet, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul ( Breaking Bad), and Norman Reedus ( The Walking Dead). Consequently, we were not surprised to learn that Bahouth hosted a birthday party for Harrelson on July 23 at his modern Buckhead home, which sits opposite the treehouses. Harrelson’s wife Laura Louie and costar Affleck and wife Summer Phoenix were also in attendance.

Local Athens favorite Curtis Crowe, drummer of  Pylon, attended with his wife Kathleen, an avid gardener and special ed teacher. They gifted Harrelson and his wife with a Pylon CD and peppers from their garden. (Insiders scoop: Casey Affleck wears a Pylon t-shirt in Triple Nine.)

Bahouth’s main house is mostly glass and instead of building an unsightly privacy fence he decided to build treehouses as a buffer. Besides, he’d always loved them as a kid. In builder Nick Hobbs he found a kindred spirit and the two built the houses in about six weeks utilizing mostly salvaged or repurposed materials.

The resulting treehouses are a collection of structures connected by suspension bridges dubbed Mind, Body and Spirit. Mind functions as a living space and is outfitted with flea market finds and other various treasures. Cross the bridge and meet the Body where sleeping is done. The Spirit is an observation area around a large old short leaf pine tree. Bahouth, who now heads up US Climate Action Network, said that the tree is the last thing that the light hits at the end of the day.

In the past, you had to know someone like Laura Turner-Seydel or even Harrelson to get an invitation to the treehouses. Now, you can spend the night there yourself as the property was recently listed on Air B n B.

For about $275 a night you can fall asleep under a canopy of evergreens while listening to neighboring tree frogs and the chirps of lazy cicadas. Bahouth said that spending the night in the treehouses is one of the best nights of sleep you’ll ever have. And you’ll have the bragging rights of following in the footsteps of the stars.
