Tour a Castle Turned Luxury Hotel in New York

While it may not be quite as old as some of the medieval castles in Europe, this early 20th-century structure was built in a style reminiscent of Norman fortification in Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Photo by: Castle Hotel & Spa Located 25 miles north of Manhattan, the Castle Hotel & Spa overlooks the Hudson River. Featuring 31 rooms and suites, the main tower of the castle forms the highest point in Westchester County, New York. Reminiscent to an Irish castle, the medieval-style structure boasts intricately carved stairways of dark burnished wood, glowing sconces, mammoth hand-hewn oak beams and leaded-glass windows. The Great Hall features a 40-foot vaulted ceiling and original Gothic windows with heraldic motifs.

Long before the Castle Hotel & Spa gained its sterling reputation as a world-class hotel, it was the home of General Howard Carroll, a well-respected newspaperman, playwright and businessman. He worked closely with New York architect Henry Kilburn, building the castle in two stages between 1897 and 1910. Flip through the gallery below.

When it was finished, the castle featured 45 rooms, including the Oak Room, which was the family dining room. Legend has it that the room’s wainscoting was brought over to Tarrytown from General Carroll’s house in St. Germain, outside Paris. Louis XIV had presented this house to James II when he fled to France after having been deposed in England. It was in this room that James’ grandson Prince Charles Edward (“Bonnie Prince Charles”) and Angus MacDonald, representing the Scottish highlanders, plotted the unsuccessful uprising of 1745 in the British Isles to overturn the German king and restore the lineage of James II.
