Known as Griggs Mansion, this imposing Romanesque residence was built around 1883 by wholesale grocery businessman Chauncey Griggs, who only lived there for four years before moving to the West Coast. Since then, the mansion has had a variety of uses -- a private home, an art school, an apartment building -- but one thing has remained the same: Visitors and residents have consistently reported some pretty spooky activity. Several apparitions have been spotted throughout the home, including a young maid, a gardener, a child, a thin man in a black suit, a teenage girl named Amy and a Civil War general. Plus, tales have been told of eerie unexplained events, like mysterious footsteps and doors opening and closing by themselves.
If you don't mind sharing a home with a ghost (or six), the property's $1.1 million price tag buys some pretty impressive features: gorgeous wood moldings, nine fireplaces, a grand staircase, a solarium and a secret playroom off the living room. In addition to a 16,534-square-foot main house, the estate also comes with a 2,954-square-foot carriage house with two rental spaces -- or places for spirits to hide.
