Own Howard Hughes' Former Lake Tahoe Estate
One of Lake Tahoe’s most historic estates has hit the market for $19.5 million: Known as Summertide, this scenic property was previously owned by Howard Hughes, once one of the wealthiest people in the world. An accomplished businessman, aviator and filmmaker, Hughes is also remembered for his eccentric behavior and solitary lifestyle later in life.

According to a press release from Chase International, Hughes had become “fairly reclusive” by the time he purchased the 5.5-acre property in the early 1950s. It’s no wonder the estate appealed to him: Set on 500 feet of water frontage, it pairs spectacular views with an extremely private location. Hughes reportedly would cross the lake for high-stakes card games at George Whittell’s Thunderbird Lodge.
The estate has had only one other owner since Hughes, and the property looks largely the same as it did when the business magnate lived there. The main home was built from local timber in 1934 and has five bedrooms, four bathrooms and an office. A guest cottage was built in 1940, plus a detached garage that fits up to four cars. The current owners remodeled the main home’s kitchen and bathrooms while maintaining its simple, rustic charm.
