My Favorite Room: Nightclub Guru Cy Waits
The Las Vegas-based hospitality entrepreneur, who is opening a new nightclub on Miami’s South Beach, tells us how he created a resort-like retreat right in his backyard.
Las Vegas hospitality entrepreneur Cy Waits is one of the world’s most successful avatars of global nightlife, having created and operated some of the highest grossing nightclubs in the world. He’s been a managing partner at various nightclubs and restaurants including XS Nightclub and Botero restaurant located inside the Encore, Tryst nightclub at the Wynn and Drai’s After Hours. Cy’s latest venture, Adoré Nightclub on Miami’s South Beach, will open next month, bringing Vegas-style nightlife to the East Coast. Read on to find out how the veteran nightclub mogul brought in 90,000 pounds of sand from the Pacific Ocean in Bora Bora to create a resort-like sanctuary at his Las Vegas home.
What’s your favorite room? What are your favorite features there?
I love the living room that overlooks the backyard; I consider it one visual space. It’s very cozy, warm and inviting. And I love the living room floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pool. The pool with the vanishing edge cost half a million to build! I had sand shipped from Bora Bora – 90K pounds of sand from the Pacific Ocean! – to complete this project. I love how beautiful the sand was and I wanted to make sure I had a natural element in my home. It reminds me of a very relaxing vacation. When people visit me, they say how beautiful and peaceful my home is.
How does this room make you feel at home?
It’s my sanctuary and where I find my Zen. I work in a very fast-paced industry and every time I go to my backyard in Las Vegas, I feel like I am in another place. I feel so relaxed. When I have some down time, I like to lie on my amazing hammock and hear the waterfall from the pool. It’s so serene out there; it feels worlds away from the Vegas Strip.
What are some of your must-have essentials at your home?
A refrigerator full of kombucha, cold press juices, kale and ginger are a must in my kitchen. And I love my large sofa in my living room. It's so comfortable that it's like a bed, plus it's big enough so that when I have people over we can all sit down and still feel like we have space. Of course, having a big flat-screen TV on the wall helps. I need my home to be somewhere I can relax and unwind, and this house is perfect for that.
What are some of your favorite colors, fabrics, shapes?
Deep reds, chocolate browns and gold. These colors are very warm and rich. I also like modern shapes and luxurious fabrics.
How do you define your style?
My design style is modern and contemporary. I like warm, modern, comfy and inviting.
Any tips on how to throw a good party in your home?
Make sure you have plenty of drinks, great music and good lighting!
