If you're not familiar with LEED -- or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design -- it's a rating system for green buildings that rigorously evaluates everything from water efficiency to indoor air quality. LEED Platinum is the highest certification available.
Starting with the roof, photovoltaic panels provide most of the power needed to run this 3,548-square-foot residence. The slanted portions of the roof divert rainwater to a 5,000-gallon underground cistern, where it's stored for irrigation, while the flat roofs over the cabana and garage are planted with low-water grasses, insulating the home and reducing storm water run-off.
Inside, you've got your Energy Star-rated appliances, low-flow faucets, dual-pane windows and LED lighting -- but what we loved most is the way it's all seamlessly integrated into the bright, contemporary living spaces. The open living room and kitchen are situated on the top level of the home to overlook the ocean, while the lower-level bedrooms lead to the pool and exotic ipe decking.
