Historic Estate on Newport's Gilded Age Coastline
Newport, R.I., is well-known for its incredible mansions, but even among all of the competition, this historic estate stands out. Known as Fairholme, it sits at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on four acres and offers cliffside views and beach access.
Location: Newport, R.I.
Listed By: Melanie Delman and Robin Nicholson of Lila Delman Real Estate
The main house is a Tudor revival masterpiece built in 1875 and enlarged several times since. There is also a six-bedroom carriage house, three interconnected greenhouses and an exquisitely tiled swimming pool.
The mansion has an impressive pedigree. Fairholme was first created as a "summer cottage" for Fairman Rogers of Philadelphia, a wealthy arts patron and engineer. Later, the Drexel family (also of Philadelphia) bought the property and added the ballroom and tower, along with other features.
