Escape to Harmony Mountain Estate
We’re starting the weekend off on a peaceful note here at Cool Houses Daily by touring Harmony Mountain Estate, a 16,000-square-foot retreat set on 100 acres in the hills of Pennsylvania. The incredible home was built with the finest materials from all over the world, and the result is a harmonious melting pot of materials and cultural elements.

Owner Peter Amato, who built the home in 2000, was looking for a property with acreage and a view. What he didn’t realize – until his real estate agent pointed it out – was that his current home happened to be adjacent to an 84-acre dairy farm for sale. “I drove up through the fields to the highest point of the highest pasture, and the view is immense,” he says. “You can see almost an hour to the north and to the east. I now know that it’s the highest point in the county.”
Amato, who owns a group of integrative medicine clinics called Inner Harmony Wellness Centers, brought in Buddhist monks, shamans and others involved in the art of sacred placemaking to explore the property, and they all found the land to be very energetic. Next, the construction of the home took four years and about 40 artisans. Materials were imported from all over the globe, from Vermont slate for the roof to Jerusalem limestone for the floors to light green onyx from Pakistan for the master bath.
Some of Amato’s favorite spaces in the home are the meditation room hidden off the master bedroom, the vanishing-edge pool and the Japanese spa. He hopes the future owner will use the property as a retreat, whether corporate, private or spiritual. “I’m hoping someone will enjoy it for more than a house on a hill,” he says. “It’s a great house, but it’s also more than a house.”
