Ellen DeGeneres Snags an Award-Worthy Estate
While this year's Oscar host won't take a trophy home from the event, she's managed to purchase one of L.A.'s most coveted trophy homes: the Brody House, built by architect A. Quincy Jones.
Ellen DeGeneres, who in addition to hosting this year's Oscars as well as an eponymous talk show, is widely known for buying, renovating and flipping luxury homes in the Los Angeles area. She does it more often than many people floss. Her most recent real estate acquisition is what could be her biggest trophy yet: the famous Brody House, built by architect A. Quincy Jones. She is reported to have paid $39.888 million for the recently remodeled estate that some people are calling “The best house in L.A.”

The estate was named after the original owner, art aficionado Frances Lasker Brody, who commissioned Jones to build it in 1949. It’s located in the Holmby Hills area, cup-of-sugar-borrowing distance from the Playboy Mansion. The estate encompasses 2.3 acres covered by colorful foliage and mature trees, plus rose gardens that all combine to create a park-like setting. Also on the grounds are a large motor court, a one-bedroom guesthouse, a pool and a championship, lighted tennis court.
Inside there are numerous floor-to-ceiling glass windows and skylights that provide a light, airy feeling and also integrate interior and exterior spaces. The first floor features a living room with a library corner, a modern kitchen and a formal dining room.
The entire second floor is made up of a master suite with a family room, study, terraces, plus hers-and-hers dressing rooms. There are also three more bedrooms and three more bathrooms, plus a four room staff quarters.
Ellen paid dearly for the remodel. The Brody House sold previously in 2010 for $14.8 million, and it's estimated that the previous owners spent around $20 million on renovation and restoration. But heaven knows Ellen can afford the price. In 2012, she and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, sold their Hollywood Hills estate to Ryan Seacrest for $49 million. That same year, they flipped Brad Pitt’s former beach house, which they bought for $12 million, and sold for $13 million.
In addition to the Brody House, DeGeneres and de Rossi own a $26.5 million spread in Montecito, not far from Oprah Winfrey’s famous estate. It sits on 13 acres and has ocean views and nine fireplaces. Guess you can never have too many places to hang your hat.
