Buy a Historic Beached Houseboat in The Florida Keys

It’s rumored that President Harry S. Truman wrote the Truman Letters on this houseboat. Now it's for sale for a whopping $6.25 million.

A rare find in The Florida Keys, this historic houseboat sits on five acres of tropical island paradise, complete with it's own private 300-foot beach. If walls could talk, this houseboat would have quite the story to tell. It was originally built in 1948 for hotel tycoon Baron Conrad Hilton and constructed out of a 60-foot Chris Craft vessel.

The boat sat in the water and was docked next to the Cheeca Lodge, a luxury hotel in Islamorada. In 1960, a category five storm named Hurricane Donna lifted the boat from its mooring and placed it on the Overseas Highway, a.k.a. U.S. 1. Workers cleverly used downed telephone poles to roll the boat to it's current location at 101 Carroll Street, where it's been permanently anchored in the sand ever since.

The cozy two-story houseboat has hosted its fair share of celebrities and high-profile personalities throughout the years, including two former presidents: George H.W. Bush and Harry S. Truman.

President Truman was a big fan of The Florida Keys and visited the islands at least 11 times during his presidency. It's rumored that he penned The Truman Letters while staying on the houseboat. In fact, there's a museum in Key West, known as the Harry S. Truman Little White House, which served as his home away from home.

The houseboat in Islamorada is listed for $6.25 million by Sotheby's International Realty and features a stateroom, two bathrooms, living room, and a galley kitchen on the first floor. On the second floor there’s a four-bunk bedroom and an upper deck with panoramic ocean views
