As we are unapologetic real estate gawkers, we’ve had one curious eye on a home in the Virginia-Highlands section of Atlanta for quite some time, and for good reasons. In a neighborhood known for its neat rows of bungalows sits a sprawling modern monstrosity so unique its bound to give just about anyone pause.

The custom-built contemporary sits atop a hill on Courtenay on two lots closer to the Ansley Park side of VA/High. Architect John Busby and the current owner (name withheld) designed the home, and it was listed on the MLS about a year ago with an asking price of $3.5 million. According to Harry Norman Realtors, the owners spent $5 million outfitting it with every imaginable luxury. Then the price was reduced by a staggering $750,000 and then slowly raised in increments of $50K.

Now it is being auction to the highest bidder with no reserve price this Thursday, May 8, 2014. Why auction, you may ask.

“Auctions can generate a sense of urgency and excitement with buyers,” said Eric Benjamin of Keller-Williams Atlanta. “There is also the competitive nature of some buyers to win at all costs, even if they go over fair market value. The best properties for auction are either very high end or unique.”

To say that this Streamline Moderne home is unique is an understatement. It’s got all the sexy curves, extreme horizontal lines and nautical portholes indicative of the 1930s architectural style and goodies around every helix. The open floor plan of the five-bedroom, 5.5-bath home spans four floors, which are accessed via stairwells (yes, there’s more than one) or a commercial-grade elevator.

Behind one of the coolest front doors we’ve ever seen is a vaulted three-story entryway with a “Cinderella” staircase that leads to an expansive open living area. The adjacent kitchen has commercial-grade appliances that include a Wolf commercial gas stovetop, two electric ovens, side-by-side Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, double warming drawers, two separate prep areas with oversized sinks and twin Miele dishwashers. And don’t even get us started on the bar area with its Sub-Zero wine storage that holds more than 200 bottles, icemaker and refrigerator. And because the house is almost 8,000 square feet, lets throw in two separate kitchenettes adjacent to the large home office and the workout room.

The master suite’s large bathroom has marble floors with radiant heat, his-and-hers sinks, a two-person shower and a Jacuzzi tub. The terrace level boasts a mother-in-law apartment/au pair lair that has its own kitchenette, ADA-compliant bed and bath, and bonus room lined with block windows for privacy while still allowing abundant natural light.

We saved the best for last: the outside. We’re cuckoo for the series of patios and balconies that overlook the large lap pool and the scissor-trimmed lawn.
