5 Homes for the Factions of ‘Divergent’

Bold black and white for Candor; demure gray for Abnegation; an earthy farmhouse for Amity. Which faction would you choose based solely on its style?

Fans of Divergent, the young adult best-seller by Veronica Roth, are counting down the hours to the premiere of the novel’s film adaptation this Friday. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago, where society is divided into five factions, each based on a particular virtue: Dauntless (bravery), Abnegation (selflessness), Candor (honesty), Erudite (intelligence) and Amity (peace). Each year, every 16-year-old takes an aptitude test, then chooses the faction where they'll spend the rest of their life. No pressure.

Obviously, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a faction: Will I fit in with my fellow faction members? Will I pass initiation? Will the faction's signature colors look good on me? But one question we can’t help but think about: Will I like where I live? Every faction’s headquarters and living areas have a distinct look, and we’ve found five homes that capture the essence of each one. Check ‘em out and decide which one you would pick at your choosing ceremony.

Dauntless

Tris Prior, Divergent’s protagonist portrayed by Shailene Woodley in the film, chooses Dauntless, the courageous faction. Dauntless headquarters is designed to test one’s bravery: There’s an area called “The Pit” – a large underground cavern with uneven stone walls and narrow, poorly lit paths – and “The Chasm” – a steep drop with a river several stories below. Yikes. Here’s the closest thing we could find to the Dauntless HQ on the real estate market: a luxuriously rustic Park City estate with an indoor river surrounded by boulders. All the thrill of Dauntless without the risk of severe injury! See more photos on the Zillow listing >>

Abnegation

The faction of Tris’ family, Abnegation is a selfless sect dedicated to serving others. As such, their homes and clothing are designed not to attract attention: simple and neutral in hue. We thought this gray, clean-lined home in Seattle felt like a good fit – though, admittedly, the interior is more stylish than the Abnegation are accustomed to. Candor

Members of Candor believe honesty is the most important quality for a successful society. Representing their dedication to finding truth, both their clothing and their headquarters are black and white, much like this contemporary condo in Manhattan. Black accent pieces dramatically offset the white walls and sleek fireplace surrounded by white Calacatta marble. See more photos on the Zillow listing >>

Erudite

The Erudite value knowledge above all else. The faction’s headquarters is a huge library with wood floors, bookcases lining the walls, and a large hanging portrait of Jeanine Matthews, Erudite’s leader (portrayed by Kate Winslet in the film). This Manhattan loft would be Erudite-approved with its spacious library, not to mention the hint of blue (the faction’s signature color) in the area rug. Plus, there's plenty of space for Jeanine’s picture on the living room’s 18-foot-high walls. See more photos on the Zillow listing >>

The use of exposed and painted brick, metal support beams, wood flooring and glass panels creates a warm, modernist space.

Amity

Amity is the peaceful faction, and its members run the farms outside the city’s perimeter. That’s why we picked out this historic ranch in Ojai, Calif. The 8.5-acre property comes with a historic barn, mature trees, horse facilities and a family orchard. Inside, the home has an earthy, rustic look with wood-beamed ceilings and wood floors.
