Sonoma, located about 40 miles north of San Francisco, is known as the birthplace of both California and the California wine industry. In 1846, Sonoma was the capital of the short-lived Bear Flag Republic after a group of 33 men staged a revolt and raised the first "bear flag" in Sonoma's town square.
Today, Sonoma has a population of about 10,000 and boasts thriving wine and tourism industries, the nationally recognized Sonoma Valley Film Festival and numerous other cultural events. Nestled between low mountains in the Valley of the Moon, Sonoma is also filled with wildlife and natural beauty.
