Although Phoenix is known as a young city -- incorporated in 1881 -- the area was first inhabited by the Hohokam Indians around A.D. 700, who built 135 miles of canals that are used to this day. Today, Phoenix is the capital and largest city in Arizona and the fifth largest city in the United States, with a city population of about 1.5 million and a metro population of about 4.6 million. The city is a major national transportation hub, served by the Sky Harbor International Airport, the eighth busiest airport in the country. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, Phoenix is nicknamed the "Valley of the Sun."
