The name Houma derives from the Houma Tribe tribe, not recognized by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The racial makeup of the city was 67.46% White (U.S. Census), 26.12% African American (U.S. Census), 3.45% Native American (U.S. Census), 0.71% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.02% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census), 0.68% from Race (United States Census), and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic (U.S. Census) or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race were 1.76% of the population.
