History
During the afternoon of August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina approached the northern coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, generating tropical force winds along coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. During the afternoon of August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina approached the northern coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, generating tropical force winds along coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. At 6:10 a.m., on August 29, 2005, Katrina made landfall just a few miles southeast of Empire, at Buras-Triumph, LA. Many fishing boats and shrimp boats were grounded along the coastal roads near Empire (see photo). During Hurricane Katrina, on August 29, 2005, the eye of the storm passed by Empire, and the area was entirely flooded, but the Empire High Bridge was not damaged by Hurricane Katrina. This bridge is the only way in or out of southern Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.7 square miles (19.9 km2), of which, 5.3 square miles (13.8 km2) of it is land and 2.3 square miles (6.1 km2) of it (30.64%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,211 people, 771 households, and 573 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 415.4 people per square mile (160.5/km2). There were 923 housing units at an average density of 173.4/square mile (67.0/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 60.79% White (U.S. Census), 33.79% African American (U.S. Census), 0.41% Native American (U.S. Census), 2.76% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.90% from Race (United States Census), and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic (U.S. Census) or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race were 1.18% of the population.
