Known as "the Gateway to the South," Louisville was founded in 1778 at the Falls of the Ohio where it quickly became a shipping port for riverboat traffic. Today, Louisville has a city population of 557,000 and a metro population of 1.4 million. The city is well-known as the home of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. For much of the 20th century Louisville's economy was based on heavy industry like appliance and automotive manufacturing and petrochemicals, but in recent years medical, research and service industries have become the driver of the local economy.
