New York City

The Big Apple is so much of a sports town that there are two teams for each major sport. So take your pick! Yankees or Mets? Giants or Jets? Knicks or Nets? Rangers or Devils? (Okay, the Nets and Devils are New Jersey teams, but they're close enough.)

Whatever team you root for, you'll be surrounded by some very dedicated and opinionated fans. Yankee fans are notorious for their loyalty to the pinstripes -- and are more than happy to tell you about it (especially when the team won the World Series in 2009). Just listen to the more than a million people who belong to Yankee-related Facebook fan pages.

And if baseball, football, basketball or hockey aren't your thing, don't worry. There's a sport for everyone here. Check out the professional soccer team, the Red Bulls. Watch up-and-coming players in minor league baseball teams in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Every fall, tennis fans take over Flushing, Queens -- the home of the U.S. Open, one of the four international Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Horse racing fans can watch the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown. And millions of spectators watch top runners from across the globe participate in the annual New York City Marathon.
