Packing Up Your Pets

How to make Fido feel at home during a move

By Relocation.com Staff | Published: 6/13/2008

Pack Your Doggy Bag

Just like you, your pet has its own belongings to pack. Here is a list of items your pet should not forget to bring along to his or her new home:

  • Pet food
  • Can opener
  • Litter and/or scooper
  • Treats of choice
  • Grooming brush
  • Collar and leash
  • Cage
  • ID tags
  • Up-to-date medical records
  • Medication
  • Toys

On Moving Day

Moving day is a stressful time for you, but it will also be stressful for your pet. You may want to ask a friend or professional to care for your pet during the days of your move.

You can also hire an animal transport service that offers a door-to-door service that includes picking up your pet a few days prior to the move and delivering it to your new home when you're ready.

If you choose to keep your pet at home, keep doors and windows closed during the days of the move so your pet does not run away. A pet may become stressed from the chaos of moving and bolt. Also, keep your pets out of the way of the movers; if they get in the way, the movers could hurt themselves (not to mention the pets).

Once you're in the car, surround your pet with their favorite toys. Pets feel most comfortable with their personal items. The best way to prevent your dog from running away is to keep them on a leash while driving or when exiting the car.

Adjusting to Your New Digs

Once you arrive at your new home, your pet will likely still feel scared and disoriented. After the boxes are all moved in, introduce them to the new house. Close all the windows and doors so your pet will feel free to roam the rooms and become familiar with its new environment.

Again, maintaining your pet's routines is crucial during this adjustment period. Feed your pet at its regular hours and attempt to use its old bowls or dishes.
